Originally, I was planning a three month stay in France to immerse myself in French textiles - the regional history, production, purpose and beauty. From one end of France to the other, fabrics uniquely French have survived centuries - toile, damask, ticking, Jacquard, French Provencal, Matelassé' and French linen, plus lace, threads and buttons!

As I was researching places for a long-term stay in southern France, I stumbled upon Chateau Dumas – a place that was founded by Lizzie Hulme in 2005. Lizzie has a love of all things creative and has an obsession with textiles. Her Chateau Dumas is a venue that offers luxury accommodation, delicious food and beautiful workshop spaces geared towards textile teaching. Within a few weeks, the gears in my brain had shifted to a goal I had made about 20 years ago – to take a group to France for a textile retreat. I struck gold when I stumbled on to Chateau Dumas!

Set on a hill in a peaceful, rolling countryside, Chateau Dumas is a 22-acre private estate with a large saltwater pool and glorious panoramic views.  There are two main buildings on the estate: the Chateau and the Coach House. The creative studios are located in the Coach House.

From original trompe l’oeil wall art to polished antique stone floors, Chateau Dumas is a fine country house with an authentic character and warm ambience.  The Chateau’s 18th century interior has been restored and furnished with a blend of antique and contemporary furniture and accessories.

Guests may explore any part of the Chateau estate, which varies from formal box parterres, walnut groves, courtyard gardens, wild woodland and fruit orchards with apples, damsons, plums and figs. There are charming places to sit and relax on the grounds and a saltwater pool to enjoy.

We received a warm welcome from Lizzie, Chateau Dumas' owner, and her friendly staff. They made feel us at home the moment we arrived at the Chateau! The chef and his marvelous meals were a delicious highlight for all! Plus the workshop/studio is unbelievable - lots of space, great lighting, air-conditioned and filled with supplies and fun collections like century old irons.

Chateau Dumas - where our French magic begins!
